This is the best story! i have bought so many copies because i want to have one but i keep lending it out and not getting it back. Starts out a little heavy but an uplifting book with excellent writing. You laugh, cry and it is just enchanting!
I liked this book but I wanted to love it. The story idea was great and I feel like the author could've really done some interesting things with the quirky characters in the big red house. It's difficult to put my finger on just what the book was lacking but I honestly felt like it was a bit slow - just my opinion!
Wonderfully original. Such feeling and the dialogues and descriptions let me BE there w/ the characters. A truly wonderful author I hope continues to write always.
This book presents a wonderfully nonconventional view of retirement and death. The crusty, self-reliant, octagenarian, Oregon farmer who is the main character is delightfully nonconventional -- and the fantasy amount of money he has to indulge his nonconventionality makes for an excellent story. Wonderful detailing like how he designs a home-made elevator for his "retirement home" gives great character to the story.
This is one of the best books I've read recently. It's based in Oregon, where I live, and I am approaching nursing home / elder care age and physical condition. I highly recommend this book for old farts like me.
Great read, if you're old. Main premise better to die a little sooner than to live your last years in a sterile uncaring environment among fellow zombies and bureaucratic nincompoops. A must-read if you're charged with the care of an older partially-incapacitated adult--or are approaching that phase yourself.
