For me, the story dragged. It felt like I was revisiting the same scene in each chapter but with different people. By the time Lyssa confronted her own demons and decided to face them and accept Eddie’s love, I disliked her so much that their good times together didn’t do much for me, I wasn’t as emotionally invested in these characters like I was for the first two books in the series. And the second book was already starting to drag with the slow plot line. Although, points to the author for good writing, the dialogue was not at all clichéd, the ideas for the story is really good. The editor could have guided her a little better on the plot though (for all the books in the series save for the first one).

I can't wait for the next book, Her books are interesting and keeps you turning the pages. Can't put them down. love em love love em. Eddie is so quiet and this was a good book, I hope that she continues with the dirk an steele novels they are very very creative.

Within the Flames is the latest addition to the Dirk & Steel series, and it holds up to the high standards of the previous novels. I have been waiting for Eddie's story for a while now, and it's wonderful to see him shine in the lead. Lyssa is a terrific woman for him. Both characters suffer from PTSD, and it's wonderful to see them help each other come to terms with some of their issues. There is also a scary enemy that keeps the couple on their toes while they deal with their own internal problems, and the prejudices of the paranormal community.
Definitely would recommend this book to anyone who loves the paranormal and romance. Love the way the two main characters come together in this story. What I like about this series is that after the first book you don't have to read them in order and that's how I have been reading them and had no problem understanding whats going on in each story. However if you would prefer reading them in order I would wait on reading this one until you read the other Dirk & Steele Novels first.
I have always loved every story that Ms. Liu has written. Every story is packed full of twisting, turning, riveting plots that keep you reading til the last page and this story doesn't disappoint! This is a must read for anyone that craves strong story lines, outstanding plots and a tinge of sex scenes. This book is about Eddie, a pyrokenic and Lyssa, a shape-shifter dragon/witch, who has no idea just how powerful she is. With Eddie's love and support, she finds herself. If your looking for a lot of sappy, sex dripping love scenes that take up 20 pages, forget it. This book has a story to tell and it does so in a mind bending, spine tingling way. This is a must read!
I am now officially in love with this series and it’s incredible writer. My only question is why on earth have I taken so long to discover this author. A poignant love story amidst some clever world building both in the world itself and the inhabitants keeps us glued to the tension of the action and the emotions of the characters. Connection is constant and fierce.

As far as paranormal romance fiction goes, Marjorie M. Liu gets little notice. And she should! Especially with her Dirk and Steele series. It has a fine blend of action, romance, and strange characters to make this a most enjoyable series, but also can be read as stand alone books. But I do recommend they be read in order, as most characters are introduced and incorporated in the story lines along the way.

That is how we learned of Eddie, a likeable young man, who has trouble controlling his fire talent. He has shown up in earlier books, taken part in rescues, and caged in a fire-proof cubicle in the main headquarters. And finally, in Within the Flames A Dirk & Steele Novel (Dirk & Steele Novels), we get Eddie's story. And of course, romance. And naturally, it's with a dragon girl who also has trouble controlling her flames. Who else could could get close to him? They also share a tragic past of homelessness, loss, and being outcasts. Even one of the gargoyles, Lannes The Wild Road A Dirk & Steele Novel, doesn't want Eddie involved with Lyssa, sensing something "off" about her. And despite Eddies hard past of living off the streets since he was thirteen, stealing cars and petty theft his way to get by, he's actually very sweet and gentle compared to most of Marjorie's characters. And while Lyssa had been pretty much on her own since she was twelve, her independent nature made her torn between ditching Eddie and saving him or letting him save her.

If this is the first Dirk and Steele book you read, know that not all are this, I don't know, "sweet", I guess for a better term. Most are grittier, sexier, and the heroes a little more tarnished. But having read the whole series, (and loved it), this was a perfect story for Eddie and what we have known about him up to now.
