Stated out well, but got lost somewhere between the explosion and the struggle to survive. Concentrates on four/five characters/ families at first then seems to forget most of them except for one main character. More detail of how/why people made the decisions they did, the consequences of their decision etc would have been good.It was a bit generalised at times - 'the military and National Guard were waiting to go in', one of the characters was inveigled to go along, at one stage, there is a piece about a lot of cars stuck on the road out of town, no water, no plan, no food, no heat etc but we are not told how they got on......... having been a first responder for over three decades, it doesn't work like that.
Maybe I was expecting a bit much, it's not bad but no detail equals just two stars, being free to read bumps it up to three stars.

The Nuclear Catastrophe a fiction novel of survival Nuclear Fiction Novels of Survival Book 1 edition by Barbara C Griffin Billig Bett Pohnka Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Others have noted that the original date of this book is 1977. It's not apparent in the listing or in the first pages of the book, which notes a copyright date of 2011 and includes a foreword, obviously tacked on in 2011, with alleged "footnotes" justifying the book's "timeless" application.
But indeed, it was written in 1977, and apparently by an author that still lived in a 1950s world where the men did the work, the women were housewives, and divorce was a word hard to even utter.
There are aspects of the plot that, with some heavy updating to the 21st century, might make sense. Unfortunately, the only update applied to this book is an odd reference to California's population as forty million. Even today, it hasn't hit that mark yet; in 1977 it was far from forty million.
The book also takes the stance that, in the case of a nuclear plant meltdown and explosion, the entire local, state and federal governments would simply sit around and wait for the wind to blow. It was an attempt to create drama where, in real life, no such drama would exist.
As a nostalgic look back at how some authors depicted life in America in the 70s, I suppose it's kind of wistful. But any of the Airport movies did it better, more plausibly, and with more realistic situations.
Keep looking for good PA fiction at the 99 cent level - it's out there.
A riveting book on a significant subject. Radiation is insidious. Its effects are devastating and everywhere in today's world. But it is only obviously quantifiable after a catastrophe which is how the writers choose to make their point, propelling you from the start into the "when" of a disastrous meltdown, not the "what if." Expediency in the name of commerce and comfort exposes us all to danger. "The Nuclear Catastrophe" makes you face that fact. All things radiological have a consequence. Whether it be Fukushima or learning that dental x-rays are more hazardous than previously thought (something we all kinda suspected) or finding a new venue for spent fuel rods (Yucca is full up), one thing we know for sure is radiation, like life, finds a way... Read this book to experience one of the costs of its use so you can make a more informed decision on whether you believe nuclear energy is worth the price.
(Edited 22/05/12) As the author pointed out to me and as the only canyons I have experienced in US haven't been near the ocean, it is plausible they live in an ocean side canyon.
Editing, continuity & the message of the book all need a fair bit of work in patches. I do question some of the events such as the earthquake which caused the catastrophe, however, the author gets the message of the story across. And if she doesn't, well just google "Fukishima" and then maybe you will understand the warnings in this book.
With some work, this could be a great story.
I thought this book would be different. As it is, it's very dated and that detracts quite a bit from wanting to read it. The author also has a habit of going into "textbook" mode which was intrusive. But, the characters are wonderfully done and I really enjoyed their stories. It was very interesting to find out how this nuclear disaster affected each of them and how their relationships intertwined.
Having lived very near Three Mile Island, I can tell you that a lot of the stuff in this book just didn't ring true. As I was reading the story, the actions of the masses (in the story) was more a reflection of recent things such as the hurricane hitting New Orleans (and how the mass public responded during that disaster).
This book should be updated and re-published. It would make a really awesome read if it were.
I much looked forward to reading this book and was definitely not disappointed. Characters and dialogue are plausible as are the vivid descriptions of the devastating instant and long-term effects of such an incident. It makes one wonder exactly how prepared we might be, individually and nationally, should the "unthinkable" really happen and how we would or could face up to, if we survived, the years' long repercussions. This book is both sobering and thought-provoking,and the subject matter well researched and presented by the authors. Even updating the book to take into account today's instant communications via social media, plus more advanced medical and technical knowledge, would we be better prepared? A fiction novel of suspense, yes, but one presenting a situation that could one day be our reality.
BCBGB with BP8 have written a very scary novel whose storyline concerns the destruction of a Nuclear power plant and the events to humans, animals and property. This is as real as it gets. This is an excellent read for the genre.....ER
