In my review policy I state that a five star review from me means that “you blew my socks off, surprised me, and I can’t wait for your next book”. Elizabeth Krall’s novel did just that. With superb writing, vivid descriptions, and meaty characters, she pulls the reader into the story and does not let go until the words “the end” appear.

Set in and around Sydney, Australia, this story is about a woman who has lost her husband to a hit-and-run driver and is trying to rebuild a life. As she slowly begins to trust herself to explore new relationships, she finds herself caught up in a mix of violence, sexual exploration, and intrigue. While being stalked on the Internet, and still dealing with the loss of her husband, her world becomes an even bigger nightmare when she is brought face to face with serial rapist..

This novel is layer after layer of human relationships and how we view each other. The twists and turns keep you guessing and Krall’s no-holds-barred approach to writing is refreshing. Her descriptions will unnerve you and yet keep you riveted to the page. Just when you think you have things figured out she takes off in a whole new direction. Her characters come alive and you find yourself swept up with them as the story unfolds.

In Your Sights is book one of a Sydney Triptych, can’t wait for the next one.

Like I said in the beginning this one gets five stars.

"In Your Sights" is a genre bending crime/thriller. Krall's intricate plot is delivered with flair and urgency. I felt attached to the characters and the narrative, but what I enjoyed the most was her unique perspective.

The feel of the book is kind of a modern take on noir. Krall utilizes photography and blogging to set the stage. The only thing more invasive than taking photos of someone is posting them online for everyone to see. In this case, the main character's stalker is doing both, providing readers with unique visions of who these characters are and who they are to each other. This aspect really brought the characterization and feel of the novel into focus for me, and I believe others will feel the same. All and all it makes this book a truly modern thriller that I think will be readily appreciated.

I wish the photos were actually available as part of the novel's presentation. There are many novelists that use this technique, and I think it would work well with this series.

At times, I felt the romance scenes were held back when I would have liked it more overtly on the adult side. I say this not because that is my personal preference, but because I feel like the relationship the main character has requires that level of expression to feel genuine. Of course this is just my opinion, and in no way saying there are any real issues with the romance aspect of the book. It was well written and provided depth and a very human aspect that I related to. I just feel being open to taking the romance to an unabashed, yet artful adult level will really add even more to an already great work.

I recommend "In Your Sights" for those seeking a unique suspense novel, or for those seeking romance with genuine edge. I will be looking forward to the sequel!
I was very impressed with book, very hard to put down. A different genre than her previous books, hope there are more coming.
In Your Sights is a romantic mystery/thriller by Elizabeth Krall. Ms. Krall is a new author for me, but I’ll be waiting impatiently for more.
The premise of this story begins with a widow, Caroline Bready, whose husband was killed in a hit and run about 18 months prior and has yet to be solved, discovers a woman recently raped and marked by a serial rapist. As things unfold in this marvelously twisty thriller, it seems she’s being stalked...is it the rapist or someone else? Was her husband’s death an accident...? The twists and turns in this fast paced and marvelous thriller are well written and the characters are unique, from the main ones to the secondary and villain.
I can’t even tell you who the hero is, or it’s a spoiler and I hate those. Suffice it to say the characters are wonderfully written and unexpected. I can tell you a little about the main character, Caroline. She’s an IT professional from Denver who came to Australia to please her professional photographer husband. She’s grieving heavily, but like any human female, after 18 months, is also lonely. I thought her likable and believable, however pretty gullible (but after losing the love of your life...who wouldn’t be?). She loves her husband’s family and so doesn’t really want to return to the States after his death. She has a heavy romantic relationship, which is obviously not good for her, with a predatory office worker at the bank where they both work. The police work is excellent, but frustratingly real. The villain is clever, ruthless, and a perv.
This is not a huge book, it’s actually a pretty quick read, especially given the page turning pace and thrilling and suspenseful events. I read it and couldn’t put it down...loved every minute of it. From the descriptions of the area and life in Sydney to the scenery and weather. My favorite is the actual hero, which you only get to know if you read it!
Let me put it this way, I’m buying two copies for a couple of friends of mine...yes, I liked it that much! I’m also hoping for more adventures for these two people, as I think they have quite a future (...hint, hint to Ms. Krall). In any event, I’ll be looking for more from this marvelous, new (at least to me) author and her stories from “down under”. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did.
