COLE ST. CLAIRE IS BACK!!! The charismatic and ever charming yet completely flawed Cole has finally come to find and lure Isabel back into his life. But being Cole he can’t just call and say ‘I miss you, I want to be with you’. No,no no Cole St Claire is not that guy. He is the ‘Big Gesture’ guy, the show up unannounced, surprise you when you least expect it and have a reality show on his back as he makes another album guy. ‘Ta-da’….

--"I can’t change the way I’m made. I’m a performer, a singer, a werewolf, a sinner.
Just because I’m singing for a crowd doesn’t make it untrue.
If we make it through this alive, I’m going to tell you the truth of why. And this time you had better believe me.
I came back for you, Isabel."

That is on the 3rd page so not a spoiler.

Maggie Stiefvater (MS) and the beautiful prose of the Shiver series is back in full force. While Grace and Sam’s love story was sweet and sensitive and subtle, Cole and Isabel’s has always been volatile and noisy and slightly bipolar. They definitely have something the pushes them together and ignites when they are on page but both are so broken in one way or another that to make them stick together is practically impossible. But Cole is convinced that now is the time, time to make Isabel his, time to come back on the music scene and time to get his life back together.

The first 3 novels in the Shiver series surround the fight of the wolves, but now they are safe. This novel is just about Cole and Isabel overcoming themselves to find a way to each other. Cole might be clean now from drugs and alcohol but he still has the wolf that he uses like a crutch when he looks for an escape. He has signed up for a reality T.V. show so he can make a new album without a label and he desperately wants to win the girls affections at the same time. Everyone is waiting for him to implode and fall back into his old habits of drugs, alcohol and girls on national T.V. but he is determined to put the past behind him and prove he is a new and improved version of himself, it just might be a little harder than he originally anticipated.

-- "I was so tired of being alone, but I was always alone, even with people around me. And I was tired of being surrounded, but I was always surrounded, even when I was by myself. There was so much talk about how everyone wanted to be gosh-darn special. I was so tired of being the only one of my kind."

I loved the character of Cole St. Claire in the original Shiver series and I love him again in this book. He is a train wreck at times but he and Isabel know each other in a way that is different from the persona that he has shown the word and while they are imperfect people they are beautiful together. Cole’s manic exuberance is infectious and it jumped off the page.

-- Wait” Sam said. “Have you seen Isabel yet?”
My fingers still felt the shape of her. “Da. We embraced. Angels sang, Sam. Those fat ones, Cherubs, Cherubim.

For all the Sam/Grace fans there are a few glimpses into their lives and the state of the wolves of Mercy Falls but nothing major just a couple peripheral glimpses which was good enough for me. The introduction of a few new characters and bringing in someone from Cole’s past was a perfect addition for the Sinner story.

I love a good Bromance and Cole’s bromance with former Narcotica bass guitarist Jeremy and new found friend Leon were fantastic. Jeremy knew Cole before the fame and fortune and spiral out of control and his Zen Buddhist philosophies and true caring of Cole were touching. I loved their moments together.

“Luck,” Jeremy scoffed softly. “There’s no luck.”
“Then what?”
“Your feet take you where you need to be.”
I thought about this. “My feet have taken me to some pretty rough places.”
“That was your dick, dragging your feet along with.”

Leon the new addition was a friend/father figure to add into Cole’s life and I liked that Cole had another friend that could look past the fame and the show to see the real man Cole tends to hide sometimes.

This is more a straight up romance novel than any of the others. It is focused on Coles the relationships with other people and his fight with addictions in all shapes and forms. Still I love that guy and I enjoyed reading it.

Side Note: The audio of the Shiver series is one of my favorites and this is no exception. Sinner is one of the best performed audiobooks out there, so if you are a fan of audiobooks at all I recommend listening to the series.

Sinner Shiver Maggie Stiefvater Books Reviews

I fell hard for Maggie Stiefvater’s gorgeous writing when I read Shiver (which was before I started the blog, hence the lack of an official review – it’ll have to wait for a reread) years ago. My cousin Carmela and I had been on one of our usual jaunts to the huge branch of Fully Booked (my favorite in Manila!), and we were intensely drawn to the beautiful cover.

Now, I’m hesitant about reading paranormal in general so I was wary of these werewolves. Little was I to know that Maggie’s storytelling style would completely work for me, or that I would fall head over heels in love with Sam, Grace and the werewolves.

I continued on with the series, reading Linger and Forever. While I didn’t love either as much as I adored Shiver, I am very grateful that they introduced me to another character I could love Cole, the rockstar-turned-werewolf.

Predictably, when I first heard Sinner was happening, my feelings were very mixed. I hadn’t been too thrilled about the additional books in The Wolves of Mercy Falls series at all (and I’ve said it before – Shiver actually could work as a standalone). But in the end, it came down to these three things
I adore Maggie Stiefvater and her writing style, and pretty much will read anything she writes,
Cole (freaking) St. Clair is a character I loved, loved, loved, and could definitely use more of in my life.
Isabel is a force to be reckoned with, a character hard to ignore, and I’m admittedly curious about her too.
Sinner was all I could have asked for, and then some. It takes two familiar players of the series, plunks them down a world away from Minnesota in LA (or, more appropriately termed for this book, la la land) and just lets them have at it. And by “it”, I’m talking about their lives, themselves – each other. It’s a convoluted, messy journey, but underneath the sparkle of celebrity and glamour, there’s definitely something real, raw and human about Cole’s story, and Isabel’s story, and the points at which they intersect.

Honestly, I was predisposed to love Sinner simply because I love Cole St. Clair. Sure, he’s not the ideal boy to fall in love with, or even the type you’d take home to meet your parents. He’s rough around the edges, indulging in more vices than I can count on two hands, with comments and actions that are razor sharp and not always very nice. But he’s also vulnerable, constantly on guard because his emotions threaten to overwhelm him.

Sinner focuses heavily on his struggle to be good, be better, to outrun the demons that plague him. While this might make it sound like the novel is sad and heavy, it actually isn’t. I’m pretty sure it mostly has to do with how cleverly Maggie writes this story, making it wistful and emotional and fun all at once. Oh, and of course, it has a little to do with how Cole and Isabel are together.

Put two ticking bombs together, and you get these two. Both are damaged beyond a doubt, so you already know that a relationship between them has the potential to end in disaster… or in triumph. When Cole shows up in LA, Isabel’s new hometown, he rocks her world by inserting himself into her life at every opportunity. Things between them are volatile, and passionate, and with each thing, I just willed them into a better place together, but you’ll have to read for yourself to see how things wind up going.

It makes sense for me to tell you all a little bit about Isabel now. Oh Isabel, the girl who has lived through such tragedy, who refuses to be vulnerable again, who wants to be strong and unemotional and to succeed. My heart broke for this girl a little more with everything that was happening to her, and Maggie definitely does not let her off the hook in Sinner. I fell a bit more in love with her, in spite of the damage (and the prickliness).

Add in a couple of fun secondary characters for color (Leon is my favorite!), throw in great descriptions of Los Angeles (Made me want to plan a visit!) and you’ve got quite the potent mix for Sinner. While the writing is surprisingly not as fluid to read as it was in Shiver, it still felt like a Stiefvater creation. I’m thrilled that Maggie was willing and able to tell Cole and Isabel’s story so well, and can highly recommend this one for fans of the series.
Book number four of a four book urban fantasy young adult series. I read the excellently printed and bound trade paperback from Scholastic. I will purchase and read any following books in the series.

This book is an interesting variation on the werewolf story. Any person bit by a wolf can become a werewolf if they survive. Werewolves are human by summer and wolfs for the winter. Until, they permanently become wolfs after ten to twenty years of shifting. And then they die in another ten years.

Most of the werewolves of the obscure Minnesota county have been moved to a place of safety. Cole, one of the new werewolves, bought the land for them in perpetuity. Most of the werewolves have been wolves so long that they do not shift back into humans anymore.

Cole, a former rock singer of some interest, became a werewolf voluntarily. He was already a drug addict and an alcoholic, looking for the next high. He figured out a chemical cocktail to shift himself to wolf for a finite amount of time to meet his shifting requirements. Now Cole is going to Los Angeles to chase a girl and be a part of a reality show. Can he still control his shifting in the middle of the huge city ?

This is not a story about teenage angst. This is a story about werewolf angst. Some have compared the story line to _Twilight_. I have never read _Twilight_ so I have no idea how the story lines will compare.

I could be talked into five stars for this book. Maybe the entire series.
